WordPress – Spam Protection

In this chapter, we will learn how to protect your WordPress blog or website from spam. Make sure your WordPress installation is up to date with the latest stable version. WordPress includes a pre-installed anti-spam plugin called Akismet.

To activate Akismet, you need a WordPress API key. You can obtain this key by registering on the official WordPress website, after which the API key will be sent to your email.

Follow the steps below to enable the Akismet Spam Protection plugin for your website or blog:

Step (1) − Go to your WordPress admin dashboard → PluginsInstalled Plugins. The following screen will be displayed.

Step (2) − Click on the “Activate” button next to the Akismet plugin, as shown on the screen.

Step (3) − Once the Akismet plugin is activated, click on the “Activate your Akismet account” button, as shown on the screen.

Step (4) − Click on the “Get your API key” button to generate a new key. If you already have an API key, you can enter it manually in the provided field.

Step (5) − If you do not have an API key, click on the “GET AN AKISMET API KEY” tab to proceed further.

Step (6) − Fill in the required details in the form and click on the “Sign Up” button, as shown on the screen.

Step (7) − After completing the signup process, you will receive an API key at your registered email address. Enter the API key manually and click on the “Use this key” button, as shown on the screen.

Step (8) − If the API key entered is correct, it will be verified successfully, and a confirmation message will be displayed on the screen.

Step (9) − Your blog is now protected from spam using Akismet. You can review comments for spam and manually mark unwanted comments as spam from the admin dashboard → Comments section.

You can track the number of spam comments blocked by Akismet, helping you monitor its effectiveness. It also helps secure your posts, blogs, and comments by preventing spam submissions. Additionally, it protects your website from spammers who might otherwise harm it.
